Preparing an Acknowledgement of Country
An Acknowledgement of Country is a way of showing respect for Traditional Owners and the continuing connection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to Country.
- Your organisation may already have a statement for use on websites and other platforms.
- If you do not yet have one, you may wish to create a statement for GiveNow.
Resources
- Reconciliation Australia provides guidance for writing an Acknowledgement.
- The Australian Government recognises three types of Acknowledgement of Country:
Generic: used if you don’t know the name of the Traditional Owners, or if there are disputes.
Specific: used when you know the name of the Traditional Owners and there are no disputes.
General: used for contexts that cover all of Australia, such as webinars, websites, or printed material.
You can find information about Traditional Owners from relevant state and territory government resources:
- Australian Capital Territory
- New South Wales
- Northern Territory
- Queensland
- South Australia
- Tasmania
- Victoria
