No you don't need to have Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status to be registered with GiveNow. We accept the registration of both DGR and Non-DGR organisations, so long as organisations are able to establish that they operate as a not-for-profit and have established appropriate governance structures.
The Australian Tax Office manages the list of organisation with DGR status that are entitled to receive gifts which are deductible from the donor's income tax. DGRs are either:
- endorsed by the ATO as they fall in a general DGR category
- or, in exceptional cases, listed by name in the tax law.
The organisations that meet these requirements are undoubtedly worthy of the generosity of donors.
However, at GiveNow, we are aware that there are many more not-for-profit organisations that are not DGR endorsed organisations that are also just as worthy. The only difference is that these organisations do not fall into the very tight legal definitions set by the legislation. We support the registration of all Australian not-for-profit organisations.
Unfortunately organisations that do not have DGR status are charged a different transaction fee by the international credit card schemes.
