Prepare an Acknowledgement of Country
An Acknowledgement of Country is an opportunity to show respect for Traditional Owners and the continuing connection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to Country.
Your organisation may already have an Acknowledgement of Country that is used on your websites and other electronic platforms. If you don't have an Acknowledgement of Country statement, you may wish to create one to use on GiveNow.
Reconciliation Australia provides a useful resource for getting started.
The Australian Government details three types of Acknowledgement of Country:
- Generic — this should be used if you don’t know the name of the people on whose land you are gathered, or if there are disputes about the land (multiple Aboriginal peoples identify as Traditional Custodians for that area).
- Specific — this should be used where there are no disputes, and you know the name of the people on whose land you are gathered.
- General (Australia wide – webinar / website / printed material)
Depending on where your organisation operates, you can find information about Traditional Owners from various State Government Websites.
- Australian Capital Territory
- New South Wales
- Northern Territory
- Queensland
- South Australia
- Tasmania
- Western Australia
- Victoria
